Dr. Craig Hood, biology professor and director of the Environment Program at Loyola University New Orleans, leads four bat-themed events in nature centers around New Orleans to celebrate Bat Week 2018, just in time for Halloween! Activities are free and open to the public and include bat crafts, face painting, a bat mascot, gardening for bats, multiple lectures, a silent auction with proceeds going to bat conservation, bat week recipes, food trucks plus concessions and even a “Bat Friendly” cocktail. On the nights of October 26 and October 27, Dr. Hood and students from Loyola’s “Bat Lab” lead a series of night walks to look and listen for native bats using special bat detection equipment. Families and children are encouraged to learn how to spot these spooky yet captivating critters.
