    Event Description:

The Aspen Institute Socrates New Orleans Salon includes a public panel and reception on Tuesday evening, and a day-long seminar on Wednesday (8:30 am – 4:00 pm). Hosted in partnership with the New Orleans Business Alliance, the New Orleans Salon will examine opportunity, access, and hope in Urban Cities.

Urban Opportunity, Access, and Economic Inclusion

Cities and regions have long been economic engines and social escalators in this country because urban density and diversity sparks creativity and innovation in business, arts, culture, and society. The revitalization of our major cities over the last two decades has brought enormous benefits to some, but now we face the paradox of city resurgence. Certain areas of cities are getting substantial new investment and attracting people and businesses. And, as these cool urban places become more compelling (and expensive), they seem to be losing diversity — even as they densify. Gentrification and rising wealth and income gaps (between the rich and poor – and specifically black and white people), are now raising important leadership questions: How can cities yield more positive outcomes for all urban residents, small business owners, and long term stakeholders? What can we do to catalyze and accelerate more growth in the ethnic, lower income and/or higher crime neighborhoods? How do we ensure that all members of our communities are involved in these discussions, so we can create move inclusive economic opportunities?

This seminar will examine the city as a place to live and work and consider ways to expand opportunity, foster entrepreneurship and preserve the spirit of continual re-invention that animates American cities.
