Oct 4 Music of Resistance: Three Centuries of Les Cenelles
Join us for a special program blending musical performance, lecture, and poetry that will bring three centuries of cultural and literary resistance to life. Les Cenelles—a reference to the robust, hearty berry native to Louisiana—has convened as a revolutionary organization three times in history: through the 1845 publication Les Cenelles: Choix de poesies indigenes, considered the first anthology of African American poetry; Les Cenelles Society of Arts and Letters, a mid-20th century salon-style academic group; and today, as a cutting-edge ensemble using words and music. All are iterations of the same revolutionary concept. The program will feature the Les Cenelles ensemble—Denise Frazier, Joseph B. Darensbourg, and Peter J. Bowling—and guest scholar Lloyd Pratt, New Orleans-area native and professor at St. John’s College at Oxford University. Together, they will share music and insights into the politics of African American poetry, literature, and music. Admission is free with registration required—space is limited.
Oct 4 Meditations of a Hermit - Fine Art Photography Gallery Opening
Join Gallery Huracan as it unveils a powerful new collection of fine art photography by resident artist James G. Barbee. The exhibition is part of the annual Art for Art's Sake event, celebrating New Orleans' vibrant arts scene. In his latest exhibition, "Meditations of a Hermit," Barbee presents a collection of images that explore the universal search for a personal map to navigate the complex world of chaos and awe. Barbee's work delves into profound narratives of the human psyche, capturing not just an image but the silent stories within. Located in a historic Creole cottage on Magazine Street, Gallery Huracan offers a unique and intimate space for collectors and enthusiasts to engage with this thought-provoking collection. The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center (NOENMCC) will launch the inaugural Rhythm & Algorithm conference from Oct. 16–17, 2025. Powered by a coalition of strong local partner organizations, the two-day gathering is free and will bring together technology professionals, students, community leaders and residents for a civic hackathon and conference designed to generate solutions to challenges identified by New Orleans-based nonprofits.
A hackathon, rooted in the word “hack” meaning “to problem solve,” is an immersive event where teams come together to brainstorm and build solutions in a short period of time. Over two days, Rhythm & Algorithm participants will work side by side to help resolve real problems faced by nonprofits. The teams will communicate ideas and develop prototypes before pitching their final solutions at the end of the summit. Winners will be recognized, but every result will contribute to strengthening and sustaining New Orleans.
The conference will also highlight how the Convention Center is shaping New Orleans’ future through AI and innovation. Across the city, people and organizations are exploring how digital tools can build stronger, more inclusive and sustainable communities. At Rhythm & Algorithm, professionals with AI expertise will teach participants how these tools work and demonstrate how they can support creative solutions that serve nonprofits and neighborhoods alike.
Guiding the conference is the Rhythm & Algorithm Advisory Council, a diverse group of Louisiana leaders dedicated to creating an event where stories inspire and technology drives change. Council members represent organizations including Entergy, Startup Nola, Louisiana Economic Development, The Idea Village and the Convention Center. The council ensures that the hackathon effectively addresses the presented problems while highlighting how community collaboration can create lasting impact.
The two-day Rhythm & Algorithm conference begins Thursday, Oct. 16, with hackathon orientation, challenge briefings, team formation and the first sprint of ideation and prototyping, ending with quick reports and community time. On Friday, Oct. 17, the hackathon continues alongside panels, fireside chats and knowledge-sharing sessions, culminating in a closing keynote, pitch competition and awards celebration.
Speaker sign-up and registration are free and open through Oct. 7. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Register and find more information online through the Rhythm & Algorithm website.

Oct 17 WYES PRESENTS MORGUS MADNESS presented by Keesler Federal
Let the ghoul times roll and celebrate Halloween with WYES! Whether you’re a fan of New Orleans’ own Morgus the Magnificent or just love all things spooky, join us for the 3rd Annual WYES PRESENTS MORGUS MADNESS presented by Keesler Federal on Friday, October 17, from 7–10pm at WYES, 916 Navarre Avenue, New Orleans. Tickets available at wyes.org/events. The event is inspired by Morgus the Magnificent, a fixture on local television beginning in 1959. The local icon was created and portrayed by Sid Noel Rideau, who died in 2020. His daughter, Natalie Rideau, will once again be a part of this year’s WYES fundraising event. Attendees will enjoy live music from The Consortium of Genius, a mad science-themed rock band. Included in the $45 ticket price will be wine, beer and food from local restaurants and businesses including: Katie’s, Byblos Mediterranean Grill, Dooky Chase, Two Tony’s, Sun Ray Grill, Junior’s on Harrison, Zuppardo’s Family Market, Martin's, Sala Nola, Theo’s Neighborhood Pizza, G’s Grill at Monkey Hill Bar, Swiss Confectionery, Baker Maid, New Orleans Ice Cream Co., Casa Nola Limoncello, Opelousas Chicken & Seafood, Vaucresson’s Creole Café, Liuzza’s by the Track, Beachcorner Bar & Grill, Cafe Navarre, Ember Indian Cuisine, Ralph's on the Park, Angelo Brocato, Blue Line Sandwich Co., Coca-Cola Bottling Company United and more. New this year is the VIP Table Experience! Guests who reserve a table for eight will enjoy a specially curated Antoine’s menu with dessert, along with wines and cocktails from Dorignac’s—including a signature “Blood Bag” cocktail, a playful nod to Dr. Morgus. VIP tables will be in WYES’ Studio A, with DJ Bambam Belonge providing music in a dedicated space separate from the main performance area. The VIP Table Experience is $1,200. To reserve, call 504-486-5511 or visit wyes.org/events. No Morgus Madness celebration would be complete without a dash of mad science and plenty of style. Costumes aren’t required, but guests are encouraged to unleash their inner ghoul and take part in the costume contest starting at 8pm. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Best Morgus Show Character, Best Couple and Most Creative Homemade Costume. Experience the 10th Annual Tremé Fall Festival? Saturday, October 25, 2025 | 11 AM – 6 PM? St. Augustine Church Grounds & Surrounding Streets | Tremé, New Orleans Join us for the 10th Anniversary of the Tremé Fall Festival, a vibrant celebration of New Orleans culture set in the heart of America’s oldest African-American neighborhood. This free, family-friendly outdoor event brings together the best of live local music, culinary delights from top New Orleans chefs, fine spirits, and a curated arts and crafts market. The festivities begin with a traditional Second Line parade, winding through the historic Tremé neighborhood and kicking off a day filled with rhythm, flavor, and heritage. Held on the scenic grounds of St. Augustine Church on Henriette Delille Street, the festival offers an immersive cultural experience for locals and visitors alike. Presented by the Friends of Tremé Culture, the event also features a Patron Party on Friday, October 17th, at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. Proceeds support the restoration of St. Augustine Church and benefit local non-profits and community institutions. Discover the History of Tremé After New Orleans was founded in 1718, the area just lakeside of the French Quarter became the site of the Morand Plantation and brickyard. Nearby, Congo Square—then known as “Place des Nègres”—served as a vital gathering place for enslaved men and women. In 1812, Claude Tremé subdivided this land, giving birth to what is now known as the Tremé neighborhood—a historic and enduring symbol of African-American culture, resilience, and creativity. Don’t miss this unforgettable celebration of music, food, art, and history in one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods.

Oct 30 From Old Roads to New Roads: Early Jewish Life in Southeast Louisiana
Join us for an evening with Brian Costello, author of DRY GOODS, COTTON AND CANE. With a record of permanent settlement since the 1720s, Pointe Coupée Parish is one of the oldest communities in the Mississippi River Valley. Créole in culture, owing to the predominance of its French, African, and blended ethnicities, the parish, however, owes much to its Jewish families, who once numbered in the hundreds and whose presence dated from the 1760s. In the wake of the Civil War, when the traditional plantation system collapsed, Jewish financiers, merchants, livestock dealers, and sugar and cotton brokers played prominent roles in shoring up Pointe Coupée’s war-torn economy. Jews were held in respect and friendship, and not infrequently married into the larger Gentile population. The earliest Jewish families in Pointe Coupée hailed from the Iberian Peninsula, via the Netherlands and the Caribbean. They were succeeded by successive waves of immigrants from France, the German states, and, at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, from Austria-Hungary, Prussia, Romania and the Russian Empire. Their numbers were relatively small, but some communities had a particularly Jewish stamp, including the Lower Chenal of False River and Upper, or northern, Pointe Coupée. The Jewish people of Pointe Coupée Parish shared in the economic successes of their Gentile neighbors, and like them suffered from levee failures and disastrous floods, hurricanes, epidemics and crop failures. Most moved to better economic and educational opportunities in New Orleans and the cities of the American North and West. In the 21st century, the Jewish legacy lives on not only in local place names but in these immigrants’ dedication to local education and philanthropy, thereby providing a rich tile in the cultural mosaic that is Pointe Coupée Parish, Louisiana. This free lecture is made possible by the Dreyfus/Hirsch Family.

Oct 31 - Nov 1 3I/ATLAS — VISITORS FROM THE DARK FOREST
Called 3I/ATLAS — Visitors from the Dark Forest, this Halloween collaboration between JAMNOLA and hollagraham transforms Frenchmen Street and JAMNOLA into New Orleans’ latest close encounter—where art, music, and conspiracy theory collide. Inspired by a real interstellar object currently slipping through our solar system, 3I/ATLAS sets the stage for New Orleans to do what it does best: throw a parade about something no one fully understands. The night begins at 7:30 p.m. with a walking procession led by hollagraham’s DJ Trike, turning Frenchmen into a dance floor for believers, skeptics and anyone still deciding, as the city celebrates the real 3I/ATLAS reaching its closest point to the Sun before disappearing behind it for several days. “My friends and I have been rolling our DJ setups down Frenchmen on Halloween for years… it’s always a joyful kind of chaos,” said Graham Holly. “This year, teaming up with JAMNOLA for 3I/ATLAS lets us make it a bit more official—same energy, new dimension, and good causes to dance for.”

Nov 10 Morris Bart Sr. Lecture Series: HNOC Captive State Book Tour
The Captive State: Louisiana and the Making of Mass Incarceration book will be featured at several upcoming events including Morris Bart Sr. Lecture Series. Visit hnoc.org for the latest information. As part of the Morris Bart Sr. Lecture Series at the New Orleans JCC, editor Nick Weldon will give a lecture about Captive State followed by a Q&A session and book signing. A kosher boxed lunch will be provided to attendees. The event is $10/person or free for JCC members and registration is here: https://www.nojcc.org/events/2025/11/10/active-adult/morris-bart-sr.-lecture-series-captive-state/ About the book: For decades, Louisiana has had the highest incarceration rate in the United States. If it were a country, it would have the second-highest incarceration rate in the world. Far from a modern phenomenon, this distinction is rooted in more than three centuries of history—roots that extend out from the principal city of New Orleans, once the epicenter of the American slave trade. In its examination of the state’s long march toward confining more of its citizens than almost anywhere on earth, "Captive State: Louisiana and the Making of Mass Incarceration" arrives at an irrefutable truth: that the institutions of slavery and mass incarceration are historically linked. Adapted from the groundbreaking exhibition of the same name, Captive State traces the evolution of laws and customs that created this carceral system and that, by design, have disproportionately harmed Black Louisianians. Captive State accentuates this narrative with profiles of people impacted by these systems, spotlights on key historical objects, and insightful data visualizations. As the human and financial costs continue to mount, this book details the choices that led us here—and asks whether Louisiana is fated to remain captive to its history.
