Oct 31 - Nov 1 3I/ATLAS — VISITORS FROM THE DARK FOREST
Called 3I/ATLAS — Visitors from the Dark Forest, this Halloween collaboration between JAMNOLA and hollagraham transforms Frenchmen Street and JAMNOLA into New Orleans’ latest close encounter—where art, music, and conspiracy theory collide. Inspired by a real interstellar object currently slipping through our solar system, 3I/ATLAS sets the stage for New Orleans to do what it does best: throw a parade about something no one fully understands. The night begins at 7:30 p.m. with a walking procession led by hollagraham’s DJ Trike, turning Frenchmen into a dance floor for believers, skeptics and anyone still deciding, as the city celebrates the real 3I/ATLAS reaching its closest point to the Sun before disappearing behind it for several days. “My friends and I have been rolling our DJ setups down Frenchmen on Halloween for years… it’s always a joyful kind of chaos,” said Graham Holly. “This year, teaming up with JAMNOLA for 3I/ATLAS lets us make it a bit more official—same energy, new dimension, and good causes to dance for.”

Nov 10 Morris Bart Sr. Lecture Series: HNOC Captive State Book Tour
The Captive State: Louisiana and the Making of Mass Incarceration book will be featured at several upcoming events including Morris Bart Sr. Lecture Series. Visit hnoc.org for the latest information. As part of the Morris Bart Sr. Lecture Series at the New Orleans JCC, editor Nick Weldon will give a lecture about Captive State followed by a Q&A session and book signing. A kosher boxed lunch will be provided to attendees. The event is $10/person or free for JCC members and registration is here: https://www.nojcc.org/events/2025/11/10/active-adult/morris-bart-sr.-lecture-series-captive-state/ About the book: For decades, Louisiana has had the highest incarceration rate in the United States. If it were a country, it would have the second-highest incarceration rate in the world. Far from a modern phenomenon, this distinction is rooted in more than three centuries of history—roots that extend out from the principal city of New Orleans, once the epicenter of the American slave trade. In its examination of the state’s long march toward confining more of its citizens than almost anywhere on earth, "Captive State: Louisiana and the Making of Mass Incarceration" arrives at an irrefutable truth: that the institutions of slavery and mass incarceration are historically linked. Adapted from the groundbreaking exhibition of the same name, Captive State traces the evolution of laws and customs that created this carceral system and that, by design, have disproportionately harmed Black Louisianians. Captive State accentuates this narrative with profiles of people impacted by these systems, spotlights on key historical objects, and insightful data visualizations. As the human and financial costs continue to mount, this book details the choices that led us here—and asks whether Louisiana is fated to remain captive to its history. In this novel program created for the MSJE, Jari Honora and Marlene Trestman will explore several remarkable institutions that once occupied neighboring blocks along St. Charles Avenue from the 1880s through the 1940s: the Home for Destitute Orphan Boys, the Jewish Orphans’ Home, and, to offer rigorous college and secondary education to Black youth, New Orleans University, which later became the Gilbert Academy. Following the screening, join us for a panel discussion featuring Eric Seiferth, HNOC curator and historian; Barbara-Shae Jackson, PhD, Research Scientist, Slover Linett at NORC at the University of Chicago; and Margot Yale, Project Research Advisor for Interpretation, Norman Rockwell Museum.

Nov 23 Hebrew Rest Cemetery Walking Tour
Join us on Sunday, November 23, 2025 for a walking tour through Hebrew Rest Cemeteries No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. Starting with Hebrew Rest No. 1, established in 1860, we’ll walk chronologically through New Orleans’s Jewish history, making a second stop at Hebrew Rest No. 2 (established in 1894), and finally wrapping up at Hebrew Rest No. 3 (established in 1938). Along the way, we’ll pass by the final resting places of thousands of significant Jewish New Orleanians, discussing the lives of 18th century immigrants who founded New Orleans’s first Jewish congregations and following their families’ stories to the descendants of their great-grandchildren. At Hebrew Rest No.1, we’ll visit a monument to the 271 persons who were originally interred in Gates of Mercy Cemetery (1828-1957); we’ll examine the raised copings of 30 children who passed away while residents of the Jewish Home for Widows and Orphans (1855-1946); we’ll look at the large section of unmarked grave sites where hundreds were interred during the devastating 1867 Yellow Fever Epidemic; and we’ll gaze upon hundreds of elaborate markers erected to memorialize mid-19th century immigrants from Alsace, Lorraine, and Bavaria. Throughout the three cemeteries, we’ll pay tribute to past Rabbis and Holocaust survivors, and we’ll observe the ongoing evolution of Jewish burial artifacts, such as raised copings, headstones, an urn garden, and a mausoleum.

Dec 13 - Dec 14 Arts Market New Orleans
Arts Market New Orleans (AMNO) has served as a vibrant bi-monthly open-air market, providing a dynamic platform for local artists since 2007. Hosted on the last Saturday of every month at City Park’s Goldring/Woldenberg Great Lawn. The Art Market showcases the creations of 300 rotating art vendors from the Gulf South region. Enriched by native musicians, delectable local food options, and engaging kids' activities, the event has established itself as a prime destination for exploring New Orleans art and culture. Playing a pivotal role in launching the careers of local artists and introducing new patrons to the vibrant local art scene, AMNO stands today as the longest-running market in the city. Recognized for presenting a diverse array of handmade artist vendors, it has become the premier market for Louisiana and Gulf Coast makers to showcase and sell their works. Important note:?On days of predicted inclement weather, AMNO will move to the following Sunday, and updates will be provided on our social media channels.
Dec 14 Jules L. Cahn John H. Lawrence Photography Lecture: New Orleans in the ’90s
HNOC is excited to bring together photographers Cheryl Gerber and Gus Bennett and HNOC Associate Curator Libby Neidenbach for a special behind-the-lens conversation about the New Orleans photography scene in the 1990s. Presented in conjunction with the annual PhotoNOLA festival, the 2025 Jules L. Cahn John H. Lawrence Photography Lecture will explore the era’s street photography scene and photojournalism through the lens of the Times Picayune archive in HNOC’s holdings. At 1 p.m. in HNOC’s Williams Research Center, our panelists will discuss their favorite moments, practices, and trends from the time period. Immediately following the lecture, attendees are invited to a community reception and photo sharing experience at 520 Royal Street. Following the lecture, from 2 to 4 p.m., attendees and local community organizations are invited to take a trip down memory lane and participate in a communal photo sharing experience hosted at HNOC’s 520 Royal Street campus. We encourage participants to dig out and share their old photo albums, snapshots, and Polaroids depicting New Orleans neighborhoods, Carnival season moments, block parties, bars, and other reflections of ’90s-era life in the city. Complimentary light refreshments will be provided.
