OUTSIDERS IN MEXICO October 7th, swing by The Anton Haardt Gallery on Magazine St. for a special showcase on Mexican Outsider Art. We will be displaying peyote-inspired yarn paintings by the Huichol Indians of the Sierra Madres, a collection of intriguing retablos from San Miguel and Guanajuato, and contemporary retablo-inspired art by David Mecalco. The exhibit will also include fluorescent spray art paintings by Juan Ramón Venegas Calzada, a Puerto Vallarta street artist, and Mar Coria’s mesmerizing paintings depicting carnival side-show culture in Mexico. The event will begin at 6 pm and last till 10, and will feature live music and refreshments. Every summer, gallery owner Anton Haardt takes up residence in Yelapa, Mexico, a pristine fishing village overlooking the Pacific. Throughout her travels, she has been able to acquire a singular collection of Mexican folk art. This show blends bold modernism with traditional self-taught expression. Many of the artists on display are still living and working today, and we are thrilled to introduce New Orleans to their magical world of contemporary Mexican art. For nearly 40 years, the Anton Haardt Gallery (originally located in Montgomery, AL) has served as an oasis for folk and outsider art from around the world, much of which originates right here in the South. Mose Tolliver, Sybil Gibson, Howard Finster, and Jimmie Lee Sudduth are only a few of the Southern Outsider artists on permanent display at the gallery.
